In 18 P_R_A_C_T_I_C_E_S, artist and performer Andrew Turner presents a 60-minute collection of 18 practices with textures that are both varied and surprising. Singing backwards, exploring new dance scores, moving with a lightsaber… With humor, a touch of the absurd, and a sharp tone, Andrew navigates corporeal, somatic, and phenomenological practices to unsettle certain habits, particularly within our nervous systems.
"Each practice is inspired by a recent translation of Homer’s Odyssey by Emily Wilson (2017), the first by a woman scholar, acclaimed for its contemporary critical perspective on this seminal myth. The piece seeks to explore the complex, layered traces of narratives and behaviours existing under the seemingly stable ‘I’." – Andrew Turner

18 P_R_A_C_T_I_C_E_S is a solo work by Andrew Turner, a co-production of Andrew Turner, La danse sur les routes du Québec, and Danse-Cité, and presented by Parcours Danse.
Andrew Turner came to dance later in life, after studying history and philosophy. Influenced by urban culture, his movement is sharp and powerful. It often pushes the limits of physicality with its vigor, yet remains precise and nuanced in expression. By combining this rigorous physicality with a keen analysis of dance practices, Andrew explores the possibilities of performance with discernment and humor. Insisting on the clarity of his proposals, he breaks the fourth wall by addressing the audience directly, offering explanations, commentary, and interpretive cues. The “performative moment”—that instant when the work is transformed through its reception by the audience—constitutes his primary source of inspiration. The spectator, through the simple act of watching, fundamentally acts upon the creator’s material. Andrew seeks to shed light on the magic of this ever-renewed collaboration.
